About this trip
Fourteen days circling Sri Lanka by bike, taking in ancient cities, tea country and national parks along the way. This is a route built around variety — you're rarely on the saddle two days running through the same kind of landscape.
Expect backroads and village lanes through the Knuckles Range and central highlands, with stops at Polonnaruwa's ruins, Dambulla's cave temples and the Sigiriya rock fortress. The pace eases toward the end with a safari drive in Yala and a stretch of beach time in Koggala.
What you'll do
- Cycle the Knuckles Range and central highlands
- Explore the ancient city of Polonnaruwa
- Visit the cave temples of Dambulla and climb Sigiriya rock fortress
- Ride through tea plantations and visit the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy
- Look for leopard on safari in Yala National Park
- Rest on the white sand beaches of Koggala
- A cycling-focused trip covering varied terrain, from hill country climbs to lowland roads
- Fully guided group format throughout
- Ends with beach downtime after the cycling and safari legs
Worth it if you're a keen cyclist who values cultural insight and strong guides. Think twice if you need evening freedom, decent snack provision, or modern bikes.
- Guides were genuinely excellent: knowledgeable about history, naturalists, well-organised and kind throughout.
- Cycling backroads past paddy fields and villages gives authentic encounters with Sri Lankan daily life.
- Hotels remote from towns meant evenings confined to hotel dining with limited meal variety or snacks.
- Long days (7:30am–6pm) with breaks in harsh roadside conditions and minimal toilet access needed planning.
