About this trip
Eight days of walking through Northern Albania's mountains, an area few visitors ever reach. You trek through Valbona and Theth National Parks, cross remote passes and stay in villages where daily life still runs on tradition rather than tourism.
Days are spent on foot through alpine scenery, with a boat crossing on Koman Lake breaking up the walking and adding one of the more memorable stretches of the route. The trip ends in Tirana, a shift in pace from mountain quiet to Albania's capital.
This is a trip built around slow travel and genuine encounters rather than ticking off sights. You stay with local families, eat home-cooked meals and get a real sense of rural Albanian life alongside the hiking.
What you'll do
- Trek through Valbona and Theth National Parks
- Cross Koman Lake by boat beneath steep mountain gorges
- Stay with a local family in Theth and share a traditional lunch
- Walk through wildflower meadows and craggy alpine passes
- Finish in Tirana, Albania's capital
- Focused on walking and remote village stays rather than city sightseeing
- Some nights are spent in basic, traditional village accommodation
- Suits travellers happy with unpaved trails and simple rural life
Worth it if you want raw Alpine scenery and genuine village hospitality. Think twice if you need predictable, risk-managed itineraries.
- Valbona Pass walk and Alpine meadows consistently stunning; scenery is genuinely the star.
- Meeting locals on farm visits and at guesthouses felt authentic, not staged tourism.
- Day 5 Theth Valley walk went very difficult and off-piste; guide unfamiliar with alternative route chosen.
- Valbona to Theth is a long, tiring day; Valbona Pass day also drains despite spectacular payoff.
