About this trip
Eight days of walking across Madeira, an island that packs volcanic cliffs, deep valleys and centuries-old irrigation paths into a small footprint. You cover a real mix of terrain, from coastal headlands to mountain ridgelines, with evenings spent in local towns over Madeiran wine.
The walking is varied rather than one long trail: levada paths through forest and farmland, a cliff-top route to Ponta de São Lourenco, and the well-known Balcony Walk between the peaks of Arieiro and Ruivo. Time in Funchal rounds things out with gardens, old buildings and the farmers' market.
What you'll do
- Follow the levada irrigation channels through Madeira's countryside
- Walk the cliff-top route to Ponta de São Lourenco, passing waterfalls
- Take on the Balcony Walk between Pico do Arieiro and Pico Ruivo
- Explore Funchal's gardens, historic streets and farmers' market
- Sample Madeiran wine in local towns and villages
- A guided walking trip with daily hikes, so some fitness for mountain and cliff paths is expected
- Christmas and New Year departures include festive markets, midnight mass and Funchal's fireworks
Worth it if you want brilliant guided hiking with genuine local expertise and good group vibes. Think twice if you're fussy about hotel quality or need clear upfront communication on logistics.
- Guides (Joao, Filipe, Filip) are exceptionally knowledgeable locals who actively build group morale and prioritise safety throughout.
- Walks well-balanced between difficulty and downtime, with consistent waterfalls and views; group dynamics across ages and nationalities genuinely positive.
- Hotel do Carmo (final hotel) underwent extensive renovation; expect noise and potential room-quality inconsistency depending on availability.
- Airport transfers included but arrival coordination poorly communicated; expect to wait for other group members without prior warning.
