Hiking the Azores

Ponta Delgada → Angra do Heroismo 6 days Up to 16

About this trip

Six days of hiking through the Azores, the volcanic islands out in the Atlantic that most people only see from a coach window. This is a walking trip through the archipelago's wilder side, with a small group and a guide leading you through it.

You trek up to the highest lake in the Azores and pass through old island towns along the way, with landscapes that shift from crater lakes to green ridgelines to sea cliffs.

It's a moderate-paced trip, so no technical climbing, but you'll be on your feet covering real ground each day, with private rooms to retreat to at the end of it.

What you'll do

  • Hike to the highest lake in the Azores
  • Walk through historic Azorean towns
  • Coastal walking routes along the islands' cliffs and shoreline
  • Cover volcanic crater landscapes on foot with a small guided group
Good to know
  • Rated moderate — expect consistent daily walking rather than technical terrain
  • Private rooms throughout, so no dorm-style sharing
  • Fully guided, so route-finding and logistics are handled for you
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you're genuinely fit and can roll with last-minute changes. Think twice if you need hands-on support during disruptions or prefer flexibility over fixed itineraries.

  • Guides Ramiro and Ayla were passionate, knowledgeable, and genuinely cared for the group throughout.
  • Hikes rated moderate (level 3) are actually harder; steep rocky terrain and climbs suit only fit hikers.
  • G Adventures provided zero support when a flight was cancelled mid-trip; stranded travellers paid thousands extra with no contact.
  • Hotel Zenite on Terceira is aging with poor service; itinerary is intensive and inflexible around weather changes.
