About this trip
São Miguel is the largest island in the Azores, a green, volcanic outcrop in the mid-Atlantic where life runs slower and the coastline is thick with whales and dolphins. This trip is built around walking it at a gentle pace, with a small group and a guide who knows the terrain.
Days are split between four guided walking tours through villages, crater lakes, hills and forest, and one day set aside for sightseeing and simply taking the island in. You're based in a 3-star hotel throughout, with breakfast included, so there's no packing and moving on each night.
It suits families and groups who want to be active without pushing hard — proper hiking, but paced so you can actually look around.

Worth it if you want excellent local guides and comfortable hotels. Think twice if you need flexibility around weather or expect truly easy walking.
- Local guides genuinely knowledgeable and professional, making hikes engaging and well-organised throughout.
- Hotels well-positioned and comfortable, close to town centre and tour operator bases.
- Terrain far more challenging than 'soft trekking' pitch suggests; steep hills and difficult ground throughout.
- Tour operator cancelled walks for light rain, not storms, raising questions about weather flexibility policies.
