About this trip
Nine days of hiking through Svaneti, the part of Georgia where the Caucasus Mountains get serious — snow-capped peaks, deep gorges and villages that feel a long way from anywhere.
You're out on the trails daily, walking through wildflower meadows and past waterfalls to reach glaciers and mountain passes, then coming back down to stay in remote villages among the Svan people, whose culture and history are distinct from the rest of Georgia.
It's guided throughout and rated moderate, so you don't need mountaineering experience, but you should be comfortable with consecutive days of walking at altitude.
What you'll do
- Trek to the foot of Mount Ushba, one of the Caucasus's most striking peaks
- Reach the summit of Mount Guro
- Walk to the Shkhara Glacier
- Visit Ushguli, a UNESCO-listed village watched over by medieval towers
- Stay in remote Svan villages and eat home-cooked local food and wine
- Moderate-rated but involves daily hiking over multiple days, so a reasonable fitness level helps
- Accommodation is in remote villages, so expect simple, homely rather than luxury stays
Worth it if you're fit enough for serious mountain hiking and crave authentic remoteness. Think twice if you need creature comforts or dislike early starts and long days.
- Jvari to mountain lakes walk and Ushguli's medieval towers deliver genuine otherworldly remoteness rarely found.
- Mt. Guro's wildflower meadows, glacial lakes, and 360-degree panoramas justify the challenging ascent; swimming opportunity included.
- Road construction traffic near Ushguli disrupts the atmosphere until evening; timing matters for that remote feeling.
- Guide quality (Tamar mentioned positively) and group dynamics significantly shape the experience; small thoughtful touches like birthday cake count.
