About this trip
Eleven days across India's classic Golden Triangle plus three places most tours skip - Orchha, Khajuraho and Varanasi. You get Delhi, Agra and Jaipur's forts, palaces and bazaars, then move on to Rajput-era temples and cenotaphs, the temple carvings of Khajuraho, and end on the ghats of Varanasi.
It's a private, partially guided trip - your own vehicle and driver for sightseeing, with guides brought in for the key sites. Standard 3-star hotels throughout, so the focus is on covering ground and seeing things well rather than luxury.
Expect a proper mix of big-name monuments and quieter, older history - a rickshaw ride through Old Delhi, an elephant ride up to Amer Fort, sunrise at the Taj Mahal, and a boat out on the Ganges for the evening Aarti in Varanasi.
What you'll do
- Watch the sunrise at the Taj Mahal in Agra
- Ride an elephant up to Amer Fort in Jaipur
- Take a rickshaw through the old streets of Delhi
- Walk the 16th-century palaces and temples of Orchha
- See the carved temples of the Khajuraho group
- Attend the Ganga Aarti from a boat in Varanasi
- Private vehicle and driver throughout, with guided sightseeing at each stop
- Accommodation is 3-star standard, not luxury
- A lot of ground covered in 11 days across six different places, so it suits a fairly full-on pace
Worth it if you value well-chosen sites and enthusiastic local guides. Think twice if guide quality varies wildly and you're uncomfortable with pushy upselling.
- Local guides were enthusiastic and considerate at most stops; tour sites were thoughtfully chosen.
- One Delhi guide overcharged for camera fees, didn't provide change, and misquoted drive times to cut days short.
- Guide quality inconsistent: Khajuraho guide excellent, but Orchha guide had poor English and weak knowledge.
- Hotels vary significantly in standard; Varanasi accommodation was reportedly problematic. Budget USD 130+ per person for monument entry fees separately.
