About this trip
This 14-day route runs the length of Madagascar's RN7 corridor, from the capital Antananarivo down to the coast at Ifaty, taking in the country's mix of highland towns, rainforest, and dry sandstone country along the way.
You'll pass through colonial Antsirabe and the woodcarving town of Ambositra, stop at a tea plantation in Sahambavy, and take a train ride to Manakara — a proper slice of everyday Malagasy life alongside the national parks and reserves.
It's a wide-ranging trip covering forest, mountains, farmland, and beach, with plenty of stops for local craft, wildlife, and scenery rather than one single focus.
What you'll do
- Ride the train line down to Manakara
- Visit the woodcarving workshops of Ambositra and the Zafimaniry villages
- Walk through Ranomafana National Park's rainforest
- See the sandstone massifs of Isalo National Park
- Stop at Anja Reserve near Ranohira
- Learn about Antemoro paper-making and silk breeding in Ambalavao
- Long overland route along the RN7 — expect a lot of driving between stops
- Covers highland towns, rainforest, dry south, and coast, so the scenery and pace shift often
- Suits travellers keen on a broad overview of Madagascar rather than one region in depth
Worth it if you want genuine Madagascar immersion with flexible hiking and a capable guide. Think twice if road conditions and basic infrastructure bother you.
- Guide and driver genuinely brilliant at navigating terrible roads and accommodating last-minute requests.
- Hikes adjustable for fitness levels, scenery stunning, real cultural encounters leave lasting impressions.
- Roads are sometimes terrible; expect rough conditions despite skilled driving.
- Comfortable 4x4 essential for terrain, though basic infrastructure reflects Madagascar's reality.
