Full Argentina Adventure

Salta → Ushuaia 21 days Up to 6

About this trip

This is a long haul down the length of Argentina, following the spirit of the legendary Route 40 from the far north to the far south, with a detour into Chile. Over three weeks you move from the high-altitude deserts of Salta to the glaciers and mountains of Patagonia, taking in most of what makes this stretch of the Andes so varied.

Expect salt flats and dusty gorges early on, wine country around Mendoza, lake district scenery near Bariloche, then serious hiking territory in El Chalten and El Calafate. The trip finishes in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, with a stop in Chile's Torres del Paine along the way.

It's a self-guided journey rather than a guided group tour, so you move at your own pace between stops while following a set route and itinerary.

What you'll do

  • Cross from jungle to high desert between Salta and the Puna, seeing the salt flats along the way
  • Explore the Humahuaca Gorge
  • Visit a winery in Mendoza and learn how the wine is made
  • Take a boat trip on Nahuel Huapi Lake to Isla Victoria and the Arrayanes Forest
  • Trek to the base of Mt Fitz Roy near El Chalten
  • Watch the Perito Moreno Glacier crack and shift, then glimpse the peaks of Torres del Paine in Chile
Good to know
  • Independent, self-guided style rather than a guided group tour
  • Suits all fitness levels, though the Fitz Roy trek and other hikes ask more of you than the rest of the trip
  • You'll need to check visa requirements for both Argentina and Chile
