About this trip
Twenty-two days moving through Argentine Patagonia at your own pace, from the city energy of Buenos Aires down to the wildlife coast, the glaciers, and the lakes district in the north. This is a self-guided trip — you travel independently between stops rather than as part of a led group.
You start in Buenos Aires before an overnight bus takes you to Puerto Madryn, gateway to the wildlife-rich coast of Peninsula Valdes. From there the route runs south to Ushuaia at the tip of the continent, then to El Calafate for the Perito Moreno Glacier and a crossing into Chile for Torres del Paine, before El Chalten's trekking trails and finally Bariloche's lakes and forests.
It's a long, varied route covering huge distances and quite different landscapes — coastal desert, glacier country, mountain trekking and alpine lakes — so expect a fair amount of travel time between highlights.
What you'll do
- Watch marine wildlife at Peninsula Valdes, including whales, penguins and sea lions in season
- Spend time in Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world
- See the Perito Moreno Glacier crack and shift from the viewing platforms
- Cross into Chile for views of the Torres del Paine peaks
- Trek toward the base of Mount Fitz Roy from El Chalten
- Take a boat on Nahuel Huapi Lake to Isla Victoria and the Arrayanes Forest near Bariloche
- Independent style — you make your own way between destinations rather than travelling as a led group
- Covers huge distances, including an overnight bus and a border crossing into Chile, so it suits people happy with long travel days
- Wildlife sightings at Peninsula Valdes depend on the season, so check what's likely to be around before you go
Worth it if you're flexible about long bus days and hostel stays. Think twice if you need maximum comfort or dislike early starts.
- Guide Cristian's daily check-ins and seamless flight coordination removed genuine stress throughout.
- Expect 118 hours of bus travel across 22 days; one overnight bus left a traveller wishing they'd paid for flights instead.
- Hostel-standard accommodation is the trade-off for the competitive price; hotels step up quality noticeably.
- Guides arrived precisely on time at meeting points; refund processed within an hour when a strike cancelled a tour.
