About this trip
Five days across Sri Lanka's cultural triangle and hill country, covering a lot of ground with a driver and guide arranging the logistics. You start on the coast at Negombo before heading inland to temples, tea country, and the old royal capital of Kandy.
The days are full - elephants, ancient rock fortresses, cave temples, a scenic train ride - so this suits people who want to see as much as possible in a short window rather than sit still.
Private transport and partial guiding mean someone else handles the driving and logistics, with local guides picking up at the key sites.
What you'll do
- Visit Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and ride an elephant at the Millennium Elephant Foundation
- Climb Sigiriya rock and explore the Dambulla cave temple
- Watch a traditional Kandyan dance show and visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic
- Ride the train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya through tea plantation country
- Explore Nuwara Eliya town in its cooler hill-country climate
- Fast-paced for five days - you're changing location most days with little downtime
- Partially guided, so you'll have local guides at major sites but private transport in between
- Includes an elephant ride, worth knowing in advance if that's not something you're comfortable with
Worth it if you want flexibility and a good driver can make the trip. Think twice if you need detailed guidance, inclusive pricing clarity, or consistent quality.
- All attraction fees are extra (£200+ per person); tour price covers only hotel, breakfast, and driver.
- Guide quality varies wildly: some knowledgeable and accommodating, others barely speak English or offer minimal information.
- Good drivers (Pradeep, Tlock, Sampath, Kumara) go beyond itinerary, arrange surprises, and adapt to what guests actually want.
- Pre-trip communication can be messy; expect final details on day two and potential hotel swaps despite advance booking.
