About this trip
This is a long overland journey from Nairobi to Cape Town, crossing ten countries over 63 days. It's built around wildlife and landscapes, but also the people you meet along the way, from spice growers in Zanzibar to fishermen on Lake Malawi.
You'll travel in a purpose-built overland vehicle with a group, pitching your own tent most nights and pitching in with camp chores. Some stretches are remote with no facilities, and days often start early to catch the best safari light or beat traffic on long drives.
Expect a mix of iconic wildlife encounters and physical challenge, including a trek through dense, often muddy forest to reach mountain gorillas. It's a trip that asks a lot of you but covers a huge amount of ground and life along the way.
What you'll do
- Track mountain gorillas on foot through dense forest terrain
- Camp inside the Serengeti National Park among free-roaming wildlife
- Spot lions, elephants and dik-dik on game drives across multiple countries
- Meet Zanzibar spice growers, Lake Malawi fishermen and San communities
- Overland by truck from Nairobi all the way to Cape Town
- Option to add a second gorilla trek if permits are available
- Participatory overland camping — you help set up tents and do camp chores
- Gorilla trekking involves up to four hours of steep, muddy, humid walking
- Early starts are common, and travel times can shift with weather and road conditions
