About this trip
Eleven days through Bolivia's high-altitude cities, remote Andean villages and the otherworldly salt flats of the south. You move from the chaos of La Paz to the quiet colonial streets of Sucre, with the Salar de Uyuni as the trip's centrepiece.
This is a country best seen slowly and at ground level, and the itinerary leans into that, mixing city time with genuine wilderness. Expect long stretches in a 4WD crossing the desert, and a real sense of how remote this part of South America still is.
It's not a soft trip. You're at altitude for much of it, conditions in Uyuni are basic, and things occasionally don't go to plan out there. That's part of what makes it worthwhile.
What you'll do
- Wander La Paz's Witches Market
- Cross the salt flats of Salar de Uyuni by 4WD
- Walk the colonial mansions and plazas of Sucre
- Pass through remote Andean villages
- Take in the lunar landscapes of the Andean desert
- Spends significant time at altitude, so check the medical and health guidance beforehand
- Long days in a full 4WD on rough desert tracks, sometimes shared with people outside your group
- Uyuni leg is basic — cold nights, simple meals, dormitory-style accommodation and cold showers
Worth it if you're fit, prepared for altitude, and want stunning landscapes with excellent guides. Think twice if you need reliable creature comforts or have altitude concerns.
- Guides consistently praised for professionalism, attentiveness, and genuine care throughout the trip.
- Altitude sickness is serious: one traveller couldn't participate after arriving, with no clear contingency plan communicated beforehand.
- Hotel conditions inconsistent: no heating or electricity reported; basic accommodation standards require realistic expectations.
- Long travel days and high physical demands; start in Peru or lower altitude to acclimatise before Bolivia proper.
