About this trip
Thirteen days across Vietnam built around families, from the karsts of Halong Bay to the paddies of the Mekong Delta. Expect a mix of well-known sights and quieter, more personal encounters, with guides on hand throughout to explain the history and culture as you go.
You'll cruise past Halong Bay's limestone islands, explore Hanoi's Old Quarter, take an overnight train south, and wander the lantern-lit streets of Hoi An before finishing on the beach and in the Mekong Delta. Along the way there's a water puppet show, a cyclo tour through Hue's old imperial sites, and community-based visits that give the trip a bit more depth than the standard highlights reel.
It's a fully guided trip with private rooms for most of the journey, pitched at families travelling together and happy with a full, varied itinerary rather than long stretches of downtime.
What you'll do
- Cruise past the limestone karsts of Halong Bay
- Watch a water puppet show after exploring Hanoi's Old Quarter
- Take a cyclo tour through Hue and learn about the Nguyen Dynasty
- Wander the heritage buildings of Hoi An and relax on the beach
- Make paper flowers with an organisation supporting the local deaf community
- Dine at KOTO restaurant, which supports disadvantaged youth
- The overnight train from Hanoi to Hue (day 4) is a long journey, though bedding is provided — some families bring their own travel sheets
- The Mekong Delta homestay (day 11) has shared facilities rather than private ones
- You'll visit several temples, so arms and knees need to be covered — a light scarf is useful for this
Worth it if you want a stress-free, well-organised family intro to Vietnam with excellent local guides. Think twice if you're after serious adventure or deep nature immersion.
- Tour guides consistently excellent—Hoc, Sonnie, Trung, Thanh all praised for local knowledge, modern history insight, and going extra mile.
- Logistics handled end-to-end: hotels comfortable, punctual, small compatible groups, minimal stress on families with kids.
- Itinerary relatively tame compared to other Intrepid trips; limited adventure and nature connectivity for those seeking more active exploration.
- Strong cultural and historical education woven through; good for families wanting context alongside sightseeing, not pure adrenaline travel.
