About this trip
Nineteen days running from Bangkok down through Cambodia and up the length of Vietnam's coast to Hanoi. You take in the Angkor temples, Phnom Penh, then cross into Vietnam to work your way north through Ho Chi Minh City, Hoi An and Hue.
This is a trip for people who like having a local leader and a group around them but don't want everything planned out. Included activities and meals are limited, so there's plenty of free time to explore, eat and choose your own extras with the leader's advice.
Expect a good deal of ground covered, including overnight trains, and a real mix of ancient sites, city chaos and coastal towns along the way.
What you'll do
- Explore the temples of Angkor
- Spend time in Phnom Penh
- Take in the pace of Ho Chi Minh City
- Wander Hoi An's old town
- Visit historic Hue
- Travel by overnight train along the Vietnamese coast
- Limited included meals and activities — budget extra spending money for optional extras
- Long travel days and overnight trains feature heavily, so patience helps
- You'll use public transport often and need to carry your own luggage, so pack light
Worth it if you want to see 24 destinations efficiently with genuinely knowledgeable guides. Think twice if you need flexibility or plan to spend real time in any one place.
- Guides like Chanmol, Thanh, and Channy were exceptional: shared personal family stories about wars, explained historical context deeply, sorted logistics flawlessly.
- Nha Trang is overbuilt and polluted; snorkelling visibility appalling with dead coral. Skip it or allocate minimal time there.
- Vietnam guide Baow did basics competently but made weak restaurant recommendations; you'll likely abandon group meals halfway through.
- Siem Reap temples rushed; most travellers wanted two extra days there. Ho Chi Minh and Hue also felt compressed.
