About this trip
Fifteen days tracing the old Orient Express route by local and intercity train, from Paris through Central Europe and down into the Balkans to Istanbul. You cover real ground this way — stopping to explore Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna and Budapest before changing lines for Belgrade, Nis, Sofia and Plovdiv.
It's a slower, more grounded way to cross a continent than flying, with plenty of free time built into each stop to wander on your own. A local leader travels with you, offering orientation walks and pointing you toward what's worth seeing, but a good deal of the exploring is yours to shape.
What you'll do
- Ride historic rail lines from Paris to Budapest via Strasbourg, Munich and Vienna
- Cross from Belgrade to Istanbul on trains through Nis, Sofia and Plovdiv
- Explore the old quarters and modern life of Vienna and Budapest
- Take an overnight quad-share sleeper train from Plovdiv to Istanbul
- Join frequent orientation walks led by a local leader in each city
- Pack light — you'll need to lift your own luggage onto train racks and carry it over cobbles and stairs
- Trains run on standard, economy or second-class carriages depending on availability, and minor delays are common
- The Plovdiv to Istanbul leg is an overnight train with quad-share bunk cabins

What's included
- Guide: All Intrepid group trips in Europe are accompanied by one of our local European group leaders. ’Local’ in this context means a leader who is European or lives in Europe. The aim of the group leader is to take the hassle out of your travels and to help you have the best trip possible. Intrepid endeavours to provide the services of an experienced leader however, due to the seasonality of travel, rare situations may arise where your leader is new to a particular region or training other group leaders. Your leader takes care of logistics, will provide information on the places you are travelling through, offer suggestions for things to do and see, recommend great local eating venues and introduce you to our local friends. While not being guides in the traditional sense you can expect them to have a broad general knowledge of the places visited on the trip, including historical, cultural, religious and social aspects. At Intrepid we also aim to support local guides in the individual cities or locations we travel to. If you are interested in delving deeper into the local culture at a specific site or location then your leader can recommend an optional local guide service in most of the main destinations of your trip.

Throughout the trip, we request that our properties prepare rooms in time for our arrival, especially if we're arriving prior to normal check-in time.
