Mexico City: Day of the Dead Original

Start & end in Mexico City 5 days Up to 12

About this trip

This five-day trip is built entirely around Dia de los Muertos, Mexico City's Day of the Dead festival, and its rituals rather than the usual sightseeing circuit. You'll be taken straight into the ceremonies, workshops and street life that make the festival what it is.

Expect food markets, a sugar skull workshop, and a traditional Day of the Dead ceremony, plus the celebrations in Tlahuac. If Mexico City's parade lands during your dates the itinerary may shift to fit it in, though the timing isn't confirmed until close to the event.

This is a festival-first trip, not a city tour, so don't expect much room for extras like the Museum of Anthropology or Chapultepec Park.

What you'll do

  • Sample street food at the open-air Mercado San Juan
  • Join a calaveritas de azucar (sugar skull) workshop
  • Take part in a traditional Day of the Dead ceremony
  • Attend the Day of the Dead celebrations in Tlahuac
  • Possible chance to catch Mexico City's Day of the Dead parade, timing permitting
Good to know
  • Very little free time for typical tourist sights — add extra days before or after if you want to see the city itself
  • Groups are capped at 12 with a dedicated local leader, though other departures may be at the same events at the same time
  • The trip visits high-altitude locations, so altitude sickness is a real possibility regardless of age or fitness
