About this trip
Thirteen days through Morocco's cities, mountains and desert, from Roman ruins to medieval medinas to the edge of the Sahara. This is a group trip built around getting under the skin of the country — its food, religion, language and daily life — rather than just ticking off sights.
You'll move between ancient cities, high mountain villages and desert camps, with plenty of walking and time spent exploring on foot in places like Fes and the M'Goun Valley.
What you'll do
- Explore the Roman ruins of Volubilis
- Visit the film set town of Ait Benhaddou
- See the red dunes of the Sahara Desert from the edge of Erg Chebbi
- Wander the blue-painted streets of Chefchaouen
- Get lost in the medieval bazaars and lanes of Fes
- Walk through mountain villages in the M'Goun Valley
- Days 5 (Fes) and 9 (M'Goun Valley) involve a lot of time on your feet — comfortable walking shoes and a moderate fitness level help
- Since 2019, camping inside the Erg Chebbi dunes themselves isn't permitted, so the Sahara camp is on the edge of the desert
- Tipping is expected for most services in Morocco, and your trip leader can advise on amounts
Worth it if you value authentic cultural immersion and strong local guides. Think twice if you need top-tier city accommodation or have concerns about Intrepid's booking reliability.
- Guides consistently exceptional—Said, Mohamed, Youssef, Abdoul all singled out for passion, knowledge, and genuine attentiveness to groups.
- Authentic cultural access stands out: staying with local families, tea with Berber farmers, local guides at stops rather than generic tourism.
- City accommodation notably noisier and lower quality than rural stays; rooms in larger cities frequently cited as problem.
- Intrepid booking system unreliable; availability shown online contradicts refusal to book, requiring multiple follow-ups and causing frustration.
