About this trip
Fourteen days across southern Peru, running from the Pacific coast up into the Andes and taking in most of the country's big names along the way.
You'll move through Lima, the Ballestas Islands, Ica and the Huacachina Oasis, the Nazca Lines, Arequipa and Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu itself. It's a lot of ground, but the route is built to give you a proper spread of coast, desert and high Andes rather than just ticking off ruins.
Rated easy and partially guided, so there's room to explore some stops on your own terms while the bigger sites are covered with a guide.
What you'll do
- Boat out to the Ballestas Islands to see the wildlife
- Sandboard or ride dune buggies around the Huacachina Oasis
- Fly over or view the Nazca Lines
- Explore Colca Canyon near Arequipa
- Cross Lake Titicaca
- Visit Machu Picchu via the Sacred Valley and Cusco
- Suits families and groups travelling together
- Easy pace overall, with guided visits at the main sites and some free time built in
- Available over Christmas and New Year for those wanting to travel that period
Worth it if you're flexible on comfort, speak Spanish or travel with someone who does, and book extra days for Machu Picchu. Think twice if you need reliable AC, working seatbelts, English-speaking drivers, or cosy hotels.
- Itinerary covers genuine highlights—Ballestas Islands, Nazca Lines, Colca Canyon, Lake Titicaca—with good altitude acclimatisation pacing.
- Transfer vehicles cramped, often no AC, broken seatbelts common; drivers don't speak English, leaving you reliant on group Spanish speaker.
- Hotels basic: no fridges, inconsistent hot water, thin walls, noisy locations. Schedule communicated day-before via WhatsApp, not ideal for planners.
- Book extra Machu Picchu day for different hikes and photos. Lima's 3-hour tour insufficient; arrive early or add a day for actual exploration.
