About this trip
Ten days across Romania, starting and ending in Bucharest, taking in the country's landmark sights without rushing through them as a checklist. You'll move from Transylvania's castles and citadels to the painted monasteries of Bucovina, a region where old customs and traditions are still part of daily life.
The route covers a lot of ground — Cluj-Napoca, salt mines, fortified churches, medieval towns — but it's built around Romania's UNESCO sites and best-known historical landmarks, giving you a proper sense of the country's layered history.
This is a fully guided group tour, so someone else handles the logistics while you focus on the places.
What you'll do
- Explore Turda Salt Mine and Alba Carolina Fortress
- Visit the UNESCO Painted Monasteries of Bucovina
- Walk the UNESCO villages with fortified churches and Sighisoara Citadel
- See Bran Castle and the city of Brasov
- Tour Peles Castle, former residence of the Romanian Royal Family
- City tour of Bucharest
- Requires a minimum of two participants — solo travellers should check availability before booking
- Fast-paced, with a new region covered every day or two
Worth it if you want a genuinely knowledgeable, personable guide and a well-paced introduction to Romania's history and landscapes. Think twice if you're tall, dislike nightly packing, or need reliably quiet hotels.
- Guides consistently praised as exceptional—George, Traian, Emil, Mihai all described as knowledgeable, humorous, and genuinely attentive to group needs.
- Daily hotel changes mean packing every night until late in tour; consider requesting multi-night stays mid-itinerary if you dislike constant repacking.
- Small cars (VW Jetta noted as cramped) and long driving days between cities; early 8am starts suggested by travellers to avoid traffic delays.
- Some hotels fell short: Iasi's Grand Hotel Traian was noisy past 10pm with poor breakfast service; Europa Royale had noise issues and safety concerns nearby.
