About this trip
This is an overland route from Laos into northern Thailand, mixing express trains, a Mekong river boat and stops in some of the region's best-known cultural sites. You start in Vientiane and finish in Chiang Rai, with Luang Prabang, Oudomxay and a couple of quieter towns in between.
Expect a good split between city landmarks, temple visits and time in the countryside — a Hmong village day trip, waterfalls, hot springs and a slow boat past river villages all feature alongside the more established sights.
What you'll do
- Explore Vientiane's Patuxai Monument and Pha That Luang stupa
- Ride the express train to Luang Prabang, visiting Pak Ou Caves and the morning alms-giving ceremony
- Swim at the turquoise pools of Kuangsi Waterfalls
- Day trip to the Hmong village of Ban Long Lao
- Sail the Mekong from Pakbeng to Huayxay past remote villages
- Finish at the White Temple in Chiang Rai
- You change base frequently, with several train and boat journeys linking the stops
- Covers both Laos and northern Thailand, so pack for a border crossing partway through
- Good mix of city sightseeing, village visits and nature stops rather than one single focus
Worth it if you're flexible with timings and want genuine Laotian experiences with solid logistics. Think twice if you need precise itineraries or expect defunct attractions like the elephant sanctuary to be removed from the brochure.
- Itineraries are optimistic; Laotian roads are poor, so driving takes longer and activities get missed regularly.
- Flight costs aren't clearly flagged upfront as a separate payment, causing surprise bills.
- Guides are flexible and will swap temples or waterfalls for zip wire rides if you ask; ask for Joy as driver.
- Hotels are solid three-star with character in good locations; Vang Vien accommodation is average but others are nice.
