About this trip
Five days moving between Laos's two main cities, with a scenic train ride connecting them instead of a long road transfer. You start in Vientiane, head north to Luang Prabang, then loop back.
The middle of the trip is where it earns its keep: the Pak Ou Caves with their thousands of Buddha statues, a village stop for weaving and a taste of Lao Lao whiskey, and time in Luang Prabang's old town with its temples and night market.
It's a compact, guided introduction to Laos rather than a deep dive — good if you want a taste of the culture and landscape without committing to a longer route.
What you'll do
- Ride the express train from Vientiane to Luang Prabang
- Visit the Pak Ou Caves and their thousands of Buddha statues
- Learn weaving and try Lao Lao whiskey in Ban Xang Hai village
- Wander Luang Prabang's temples, colonial streets and night market
- Explore Vientiane's temples and museums on a leisurely final day
- Fast-paced for five days — you're based in two cities with a full day of travel between them
- Suits those wanting a short, guided taster of Laos rather than an in-depth trip
Worth it if you value guides' local knowledge and cultural immersion. Think twice if you need consistently reliable drivers and seamless logistics across all legs.
- Vientiane guide Sai was outstanding: excellent English, genuine knowledge, went out of his way for guests.
- Driver inconsistency: Vientiane driver was 20 minutes late both days and made no effort to engage with guests.
- Day five felt padded: repeated weaving demo and market shopping instead of exploring new Vientiane sights.
- Pacing matters: cramming full itinerary after early hospital visit was exhausting; Luang Prabang's relaxed spacing worked better.
