About this trip

Five days in northern Vietnam built around two contrasting settings: the tangle of Hanoi's Old Quarter and the still waters of Ha Long Bay.

You start by exploring streets shaped by centuries of trade, then head out to the bay for a slower-paced cruise among limestone islands.

It's an easy-going, partially guided trip, suited to families or groups after a first taste of Vietnam rather than a deep dive.

What you'll do

  • Wander the 36 streets of Hanoi's Old Quarter, each historically tied to a trade
  • Cruise Ha Long Bay, one of the new seven wonders of the world
  • Take in limestone pillars rising from the water across the bay's islands and islets
Good to know
  • Easy pace, suited to families and groups
  • Partially guided, so some time is your own to explore

  1. HANOI ARRIVAL (-/-/-) — Hanoi

Land at Noi Bai and drive 35 minutes into central Hanoi for check-in. Spend your evening exploring the Old Quarter: grab a local beer on Ta Hien Street to watch the chaos unfold, or browse the countless bars, shops and malls scattered throughout the neighbourhood.

  2. After breakfast, visit Tran Quoc Pagoda, a 1500-year-old Buddhist temple on an island in West Lake and the oldest in Hanoi. Continue to the Ho Chi Minh complex, which includes his mausoleum, the presidential palace and his house on stilts.

  3. HANOI - HALONG (B/L/D) — Hanoi

Drive east for three hours through the Red River delta's patchwork of paddies and villages to reach Halong Bay. Cruise past thousands of limestone karsts and islands, exploring the Surprising Grotto, swimming or kayaking, and eating fresh seafood on board.

  4. Take a boat into Luon Cave, a calm ring-shaped pool inside an island surrounded by emerald water. Return past named landmarks like Cock-Fighting Rock and Sail Island, then shuttle back to Hanoi for the evening.

  5. Free time until your transfer to the airport. Standard checkout is noon.
