About this trip
A nine-day active family trip through Northern Vietnam, built around cycling, kayaking and a night on a boat in Ha Long Bay. It's designed for families travelling with teenagers who don't mind getting out of breath together.
You start in Hanoi with a bike ride through the city and lunch at a social enterprise that supports disadvantaged youth, then head into the countryside for a two-day ride down to Ninh Binh. From there it's kayaking in Ha Long Bay and exploring Hoi An's Old Town on foot and by bike.
This isn't a sit-back-and-relax holiday — there's real distance to cover, including an overnight train with shared, basic facilities, so it suits families who are comfortable roughing it a little for the sake of seeing more.
What you'll do
- Cycle through Hanoi and share lunch at a social enterprise supporting disadvantaged youth
- Ride two days through the countryside from Luong Son to Ninh Binh
- Kayak the waters of Ha Long Bay and spend a night aboard a traditional boat
- Explore Hoi An's Old Town on foot and by bike
- Take an overnight train between destinations
- Days 3 and 4 involve up to 60 km of cycling, so a good level of fitness is needed for both parents and teens
- The overnight train has shared, basic facilities — worth preparing teens for this in advance
- Most children on this trip are aged 10 to 14, with an average age of 13
Worth it if you want guides who genuinely connect with teenagers and a well-paced mix of activities. Think twice if you're cycling around Hanoi in winter without checking the weather forecast first.
- Guides consistently praised for patience, humour, and genuine skill managing teenagers through activities and group dynamics.
- Trip balances parent and teenager interests with variety; relief of not managing travel logistics yourself with teens in tow.
- Cycling leg around Hanoi in winter brought cold, wet weather; pre-tour notes failed to warn about appropriate clothing needs.
- Group cohesion strong across nationalities; families bonded quickly, suggesting good traveller mix and guide facilitation skills.
