About this trip
Three stops, three distinct sides of Portugal: Lisbon's steep streets and history, Porto's riverside charm, and the volcanic calm of the Azores. This is a private, partially guided trip, so you'll have guided highlights mixed with time to explore on your own.
You start with three nights in Lisbon, taking in the old neighbourhoods, a food and wine tour, and a day trip out to Sintra to see Pena Palace. From there it's the train to Porto for three more nights, with a port cellar visit and a full day out in the Douro Valley for wine tastings and a river cruise.
The trip ends with three nights in the Azores, a shift in pace entirely — volcanic scenery, green hills, and quiet lakes, with space to slow down after two busy cities.
What you'll do
- Explore Lisbon's historic neighbourhoods on a guided city tour
- Take a food and wine tour through Lisbon
- Day trip to Sintra to see Pena Palace
- Hop-on hop-off tour and port cellar visit in Porto
- Wine tasting and river cruise in the Douro Valley
- Take in volcanic landscapes and lakes in the Azores
- Private trip with a mix of guided activities and free time
- Easy pace overall, with a proper slowdown built in during the Azores stretch
- Suits families or small private groups travelling together
Worth it if you value responsive staff and flexible itineraries. Think twice if you need a traditional group tour or expect all hotels to match their star ratings.
- Staff respond within minutes to issues and proactively adapt plans when attractions close unexpectedly.
- One Azores hotel advertised as 4-star was in poor repair with workers doing repairs, evacuated due to electrical fault.
- This is a semi-independent tour: you travel largely alone between timed group activities, guided by email and messages.
- Lisbon hotel location was inconvenient to main activities and drop-off at hotel end of day not always included.
