About this trip
Sixteen days across all five Central Asian republics — Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan — covering a huge amount of ground and a huge range of landscapes, from steppe and alpine lakes to Silk Road cities and desert.
You move from Kazakhstan's open steppe and mountains into Kyrgyzstan's pastures and lakes, then on to Uzbekistan's Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva, before the remote roads of Tajikistan's Pamirs and finally Turkmenistan's Karakum Desert and the Darvaza Gas Crater.
It's a fully guided small-group trip with private rooms throughout, built for people who want the region's history and hospitality without having to plan the logistics of crossing five borders themselves.
What you'll do
- See the turquoise domes and mosaics of Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva
- Cross the Pamir Highway through Tajikistan's remote mountain villages
- Stand by the Darvaza Gas Crater in Turkmenistan's Karakum Desert
- Take in Kyrgyzstan's alpine lakes and pastures
- Experience Kazakhstan's steppe and snow-capped peaks
- Share meals and traditions with locals across all five countries
- Covers five countries in 16 days, so travel days and border crossings are a regular part of the itinerary
- Rated easy, but the sheer distance and range of terrain make it a full itinerary rather than a relaxed one
- Private rooms throughout, with a guide leading the group across all five countries
Worth it if you want five countries affordably with small groups and decent guides. Think twice if you need comfort, fluent English throughout, or time to linger.
- Small group size of 15 people creates a personal, intimate experience rather than herded tourism.
- Local guide quality is inconsistent; some have poor English, soft voices, and malfunctioning microphones make sections nearly inaudible.
- Sprinter vans with no back windows mean rear passengers miss scenery on nature-heavy sections like Kazakhstan.
- Relentless pace across five countries in 16 days suits schedule-conscious travellers but leaves limited time at standout sites like Samarkand.
