About this trip
Twenty-three days crossing all five Central Asian republics, from Almaty in Kazakhstan through to Ashgabat in Turkmenistan. This is a long, comprehensive route through a region shaped by Silk Road trade, Mongol expansion, and decades of Soviet rule, and it shows in everything from tiled madrassas to wide Soviet-era boulevards.
You move through deserts, open steppe and mountain scenery, with stops in traditional villages and market towns along the way. It is a fully guided small-group trip at an easy pace, staying in guesthouses and hotels rather than camping out.
This particular itinerary runs Almaty to Ashgabat and takes in Chon-Kemin and Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan. A reverse-direction version exists too, with a different Kyrgyzstan route that includes Son Kul Lake and two nights in yurts — worth checking if that appeals more.
