Forbidden Lhasa & Everest Base Camp

Lhasa → Kathmandu 9 days Up to 10

About this trip

This trip takes you through Central and South Tibet, from the monasteries and markets of Lhasa to the Rongbuk Monastery and Everest Base Camp, where you get one of the clearest views of the mountain anywhere on the route.

In Lhasa you'll spend time exploring the Potala Palace, once home to the Dalai Lama, along with Drepung Monastery and the Barkhor Market area. From there the route continues through Gyantse and on towards Everest, taking in Tashilhunpo Monastery and the Yarlung Tsangpo Valley along the way.

The final stretch to Base Camp is done partly on foot and partly by vehicle, ending at the tent camp below Everest where climbers gather before their attempts. It's a mix of high-altitude landscape and Tibetan culture, with some proper walking involved.

What you'll do

  • Visit the Potala Palace, former residence of the Dalai Lama
  • Explore Drepung Monastery and the Barkhor Market in Lhasa
  • See Tashilhunpo Monastery in Gyantse
  • Travel through the Yarlung Tsangpo Valley
  • Walk or drive from Rongbuk Monastery to Everest Base Camp
  • Views of Everest, Makalu, Lhotse and Cho Oyu
Good to know
  • High altitude throughout — this is a moderate trek and involves time at serious elevation
  • Partially guided, so you'll have some independence alongside group activities
  • Pace is steady rather than rushed, with several stops across Lhasa and onward towards Everest
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you're prepared for permit bureaucracy and can handle altitude. Think twice if you need flexibility or want to avoid pre-trip logistics.

  • Tibet permit requires five days in Nepal first; tour operator doesn't disclose this upfront, risking unexpected costs.
  • Guide Lakpa's constant altitude checks and punctuality, plus unobstructed Everest sunrise from north face, made it unforgettable.
  • Three nights in Lhasa before EBC actually works for acclimatisation; overland return to Kathmandu completes the experience well.
  • EBC accommodation is spartan and altitude is genuinely challenging, but staying two hours away isn't worth the trade-off.
