About this trip
This trek follows the classic route to Everest Base Camp on foot, through Sherpa villages and Sagarmatha National Park, then swaps the multi-day walk back for a helicopter flight to Lukla and on to Kathmandu.
You'll fly into Lukla to start, trek up through Namche Bazaar, Tengboche and Dingboche, and climb Kalapatthar for the closest views of Everest itself (the summit isn't visible from Base Camp, hidden behind closer peaks). Along the way you pass through Tibetan Buddhist villages, monasteries and the Sagarmatha National Park's high-altitude terrain.
It's a fully guided group trip graded moderate to adventurous, with the altitude and daily walking distances being the real test rather than technical climbing.
What you'll do
- Trek through Sherpa villages from Lukla to Gorakshep
- Reach Kalapatthar (5,555m) for close-up views of Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse
- Explore Namche Bazaar, the Khumbu region's trading hub, including the Sherpa Museum
- Visit Tengboche Monastery, the largest in the region
- Walk through Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
- Skip the multi-day walk out with a helicopter flight back to Kathmandu
- Moderate to adventurous grade — expect long walking days at altitude up to 5,555m
- Best done in spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November)
- You stay in a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu and lodges during the trek, with meals ranging from Dal Bhaat to continental and Indian dishes
Worth it if you want guides who genuinely care and the helicopter return saves your knees. Think twice if you're a solo traveller expecting group dynamics or need bulletproof insurance support.
- Guides Bishnu and Nawin consistently go above and beyond, tailoring routes and spending extra time on your interests.
- Solo travellers report booking mix-ups and insurance claims through their partner XCover were slow or non-responsive.
- Helicopter return means you avoid the gruelling trek down and get extra days for Chitwan or Kathmandu sightseeing.
- Chola Pass is harder than EBC itself; porters like Tek and Santa provide genuine friendship, not just logistics support.
