About this trip
The Maasai Mara is Kenya's best-known safari ground, 700 square miles of acacia-dotted grassland and hazy hills that looks the way you'd always pictured Africa to look.
This is also where the wildebeest and zebra migration plays out each year, as millions of animals cross over from the Serengeti in search of water and grazing, with lion, cheetah, hyena, jackal and vultures following close behind.
Over five days you're out in the reserve watching this unfold, from the huge herds themselves to the predators working the edges of them.
What you'll do
- Game drives across the Maasai Mara's open grasslands
- Watch wildebeest and zebra herds crossing from the Serengeti
- Spot lion, cheetah, hyena and jackal on the trail of the migration
- Look out for vultures circling above the action
- Take in the acacia-studded plains and hills of the reserve
- Wildlife movements are natural and unscheduled, so sightings vary day to day
- A short, focused safari on one reserve rather than a longer multi-region itinerary
Worth it if you want genuine Big Five sightings and an active guide. Think twice if you need luxury lodges or precise itinerary details before booking.
- Guides are genuinely sharp: spot leopards in trees, patient during migration crossings, clear wildlife insights.
- First night Nairobi hotel is basic with dodgy plumbing; itinerary listed as 5 days but actually 6 days/5 nights.
- Accommodation quality varies significantly; budget lodges mixed with nicer ones; not suitable if you want consistent fine dining.
- Wildebeest crossing sightings happen but timing depends on migration; game drives stay active throughout.
