About this trip
Ten days on foot through the Annapurna region, walking from lush lowland villages up to the amphitheatre of peaks surrounding Annapurna Base Camp itself. The trail shifts constantly, from terraced fields and rhododendron forest to high mountain terrain, with Annapurna I, Machhapuchhre and Hiunchuli in view for much of the way.
This isn't just a walk through scenery. The route passes through Gurung and Magar villages, and you'll spend evenings in tea houses run by local families, eating home-cooked meals and sharing the trail with trekkers from elsewhere.
The paths mix steady climbs with gentler stretches, so it suits a range of fitness levels, though you should expect several long days on your feet and nights at altitude.
What you'll do
- Reach Annapurna Base Camp and take in the surrounding peaks
- Walk through rhododendron and bamboo forest along the trail
- Cross suspension bridges over fast-moving rivers
- Stay in tea houses in Gurung and Magar villages
- See Machhapuchhre (Fishtail), Hiunchuli and Dhaulagiri from the trail
- Accommodation is in tea houses and lodges with basic amenities, including hot showers on most nights
- Best trekked in spring (March–May) or autumn (September–November) for clearer skies
- Involves consecutive days of hiking with both steep ascents and descents
Worth it if you're fit enough for a genuine physical challenge and value guide quality. Think twice if crowding bothers you or you need hand-holding through logistics.
- Guide quality is genuinely exceptional—named guides like Rohit, Naresh and Nilam consistently praised for warmth, professionalism and attention to detail.
- Mountain scenery and views of the lake are genuinely breathtaking; trekkable with children aged 12 and up if reasonably fit.
- Trek is physically exhausting and not always easy; genuinely tough for those unused to regular adventure; early starts and long days expected.
- Popular route means crowding on the trail, especially near ABC itself; expect company rather than solitude.
