Kakadu to Litchfield 3 Day 4WD Soft Adventure (Camping) Tour

Start & end in Darwin 3 days Up to 21

About this trip

Three days of 4WD travel through Kakadu and Litchfield National Parks, covering ancient Aboriginal rock art, wetland cruises and waterfall hikes. You're camping each night, cooking meals together as a group, and moving through some genuinely old, culturally significant landscapes.

Days are active — walking through monsoon rainforest to reach waterfalls and swimming holes, cruising wetlands to spot crocodiles, and visiting rock art sites with a guide who can explain what you're looking at. Evenings are spent at private bush campsites with proper kitchens, sleeping in twin safari tents or swags under open sky.

It's built around shared effort as much as sightseeing — preparing food together, sitting round a campfire, adjusting plans as the guide reads the group's fitness and the season's conditions.

What you'll do

  • Cruise the Mary River Wetlands watching for crocodiles and barramundi at Cahills Crossing
  • See Aboriginal rock art and sunset views at Ubirr Rock
  • Walk through Burrungkuy (Nourlangie) rock art country with your guide
  • Hike to Kakadu's waterfalls and cool off in the plunge pools (seasonal)
  • Swim at Florence Falls, Buley Rockhole or Wangi Falls in Litchfield
  • Spot the centuries-old magnetic termite mounds
Good to know
  • Camping throughout, in twin safari tents or bush swags with shared camp kitchens
  • Itinerary shifts with the season — many falls don't open until late June, and access depends on weather and group fitness
  • Involves genuine hiking through rainforest terrain, so a reasonable level of fitness helps
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want knowledgeable guides and comfortable camping with strong national park access. Think twice if you prefer hiking over swimming stops or need robust vehicle backup equipment.

  • Guides consistently praised for being knowledgeable, enthusiastic, well-organised and genuinely invested in group experience.
  • Camping accommodation and meals well-organised; bus described as comfortable for long driving days between sites.
  • Litchfield section focuses heavily on three swimming spots rather than hiking, limiting broader park exploration for some travellers.
  • Long hours in vehicle required to cover both parks; one flat tyre revealed inadequate repair equipment on board.
