About this trip
Northern Tuscany's Garfagnana region is a different side of Tuscany, all dramatic mountain trails and wild national park rather than vineyards and gentle hills. You base yourself in a stone farmhouse on the lower slopes of the Apennines and head out each day with an expert guide to walk some of the area's best trails.
Evenings are given over to traditional hospitality and proper Italian food back at the farmhouse. A free day partway through lets you head off to Lucca, the Cinque Terre, Florence or Pisa, depending on what you fancy.
Most departures run at a moderate pace, but there are tougher options for those who want to push harder, including a night spent up in a mountain refuge.
What you'll do
- Walk dramatic trails through the Garfagnana's national parks
- Base yourself in a stone farmhouse on the lower Apennine slopes
- Free day to explore Lucca, Cinque Terre, Florence or Pisa
- Share evenings of traditional Italian food and hospitality
- Option to tackle a harder route and overnight in a mountain refuge
- Centre-based — you return to the same farmhouse each night rather than moving on
- Most departures are graded moderate, but a more challenging version of the trip is also available — check the activity level before booking
- Rooms are shared
Worth it if you're fit enough for proper mountain hiking and embrace variable weather. Think twice if you expect leisurely walks or didn't train beforehand.
- Guide Sara consistently praised for patient, knowledgeable leadership that adapts routes when weather changes.
- Walks are mountainous and challenging—one traveller unprepared for difficulty level and regretted not training or bringing proper boots.
- Accommodation at Braccicorti farmhouse and local food genuinely excellent; staff accommodated dietary requirements without fuss.
- Two friendly dogs, Elvis and Dora, walk with the group daily—brilliant if you like dogs, a heads-up if you're allergic.
