About this trip
Three days out from Uyuni into Bolivia's salt flats, taking in the vast white expanse, high desert scenery, and lagoons coloured by mineral deposits.
You'll stop at the old train cemetery on the way out, spend time in traditional villages, and get a night in a hotel built from salt blocks. There's room for the classic perspective photos on the flats too, plus a chance to spot wildlife native to the altiplano.
It runs as a private, partially guided trip, so you get your own vehicle and driver rather than joining a big group, with some sections left for you to explore at your own pace.
What you'll do
- Cross the vast white expanse of the Uyuni Salt Flats
- Visit the rusting train cemetery outside Uyuni
- See mineral-coloured lagoons in the high desert
- Overnight in a hotel built from salt blocks
- Take creative perspective photos on the flats
- Pass through traditional altiplano villages
- Private and partially guided, so you travel with your own vehicle and driver
- A short trip that covers a lot of ground in three days, expect long drives between sights
- Suits families as well as those after an adventure-focused route
Worth it if you value dramatic desert landscapes and can embrace rustic conditions. Think twice if you need creature comforts or dislike long, dusty driving days.
- Flights included mean you skip brutal overnight buses and arrive fresh for the salt flats.
- Guides are genuinely knowledgeable, experienced and engaging; drivers prioritise your comfort on long stretches.
- Desert hostels are bare-minimum: no electricity, running water or wifi; staff attitude can be unwelcoming.
- Long, dusty drives between sites are unavoidable but reviewers felt the scenery made it worthwhile.
