Desert Tour from Marrakech to Merzouga with Camel Ride

Start & end in Marrakesh 3 days Up to 17

About this trip

A three-day run from Marrakech across the High Atlas Mountains to the dunes of Erg Chebbi, done as a shared group tour so it keeps costs down without cutting out the good bits.

You'll pass through the Haouz plains, over the mountain passes, along valleys dotted with old kasbahs, and out onto rocky plateaus before the desert opens up. The pace is steady rather than relaxed — three days covering a lot of ground — but the payoff is a sunset camel ride and a night sleeping out under the stars at a desert camp.

It's built for people who want a real taste of the Sahara without a big budget or a long itinerary, and who don't mind covering distance to get there.

What you'll do

  • Cross the High Atlas Mountains via its mountain passes
  • Pass through valleys and old kasbahs en route to the desert
  • Ride camels into Erg Chebbi at sunset
  • Sleep overnight in a traditional camp among the dunes
  • See the shift from fertile plains to rocky plateau to golden desert
Good to know
  • Shared group tour, so you'll be travelling with other travellers, not privately
  • Fast-paced — three days covers Marrakech to Merzouga and back within that timeframe
  • Partially guided, with some sections left to explore independently
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want genuine desert immersion and stellar guides. Think twice if budget accommodation and hard selling at stops bother you.

  • Quality of guide makes or breaks it. Hassan and Yassine transformed the experience through knowledge, warmth, and genuine effort.
  • Budget-tier default accommodation is genuinely rough: no hot water, thin mattresses, poor food, rude staff. Upgrade essential.
  • Stops along route feel designed for commission: rose shops, museums, merchants. Brief explanations then pressure to buy.
  • Heavy driving days but worth it for Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou, quad bikes, camel ride, sunset and sunrise.
