About this trip
Six days travelling overland from Bangkok up to Chiang Mai, taking in Thailand's historical heart along the way. You move from the old capital of Ayutthaya through Phitsanulok before reaching the hill country in the north.
The route includes the Golden Triangle, the border area once known for opium production, giving the trip a bit of history beyond the temples. Travel is by coach, in a small group of up to 8 people.
It's a partially guided, easy-paced trip, so there's room to explore some stops on your own alongside the group itinerary.
What you'll do
- Explore the ruined temples of Ayutthaya, Thailand's former capital
- Stop in Phitsanulok on the route north
- Visit the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos and Myanmar meet
- Travel overland from Bangkok to Chiang Mai by coach
- Small group of up to 8 travellers
- Partially guided — some free time built in alongside guided stops
- Easy pace, suited to those who prefer a relaxed itinerary
- Tour runs in English only
Worth it if you want well-organised cultural immersion with strong guides. Think twice if hotel quality and itinerary consistency matter to you.
- Guides consistently praised for knowledge, warmth, and going above and beyond to make the experience personal.
- Hotel standards vary sharply; Imperial Phitsanulok had mouse droppings and cockroaches, Wienglakor had broken plumbing and loud AC.
- Itinerary changes not communicated; one traveller visited a wood workshop instead of promised Baan Tipmanee elephant sanctuary.
- Group sizes vary unpredictably; one person booked a group tour but travelled solo with no prior notice or compensation offered.
