About this trip
A single day in Kathmandu with a guide, moving between three of the valley's most significant historic and religious sites. You start in the old Durbar Square, still lined with temples and palaces from the Malla and Shah eras, then head out to the hilltop Swayambhunath stupa before finishing at the vast Boudhanath stupa in the afternoon.
It's a walking and short-drive day rather than a hike, with a lunch break built in, so the pace stays easy. Good if you want the layered history and religious life of the valley explained rather than discovered on your own.
What you'll do
- Explore Kathmandu Durbar Square, including Kumari Ghar and the Kal Bhairab shrine
- See the Kastamandap rest house, built from a single tree in 1596
- Visit Swayambhunath, the hilltop Buddhist stupa known for its resident monkeys and city views
- Walk around Boudhanath, one of South Asia's largest Buddhist stupas, in the Tibetan quarter of the city
- Runs 9am to 4pm with a lunch break, mostly on foot with some short drives between sites
- Photography of the Kumari, the living goddess, is not allowed
- Easy pace, suited to families and those who prefer a guided city day over independent exploring
Worth it if you want knowledgeable local guides and a hassle-free city overview. Think twice if you need depth beyond the main temples and markets in one day.
- Guides (Rasu, Kumar, Raju, Ganesh, Sankar) consistently praised for knowledge, patience, and local bargaining help.
- Covers major sites—Kathmandu Darbar Square, Patan, Pashupatinath, Boudhnath—each with distinct culture and history.
- One day limits exploration; travellers with only a few days in Nepal squeezed this in alongside other activities.
- Company arranges car, driver, and guide seamlessly; professional, responsive service from booking through tour.
