About this trip
Fifteen days moving from mainland Ecuador into the Galapagos, mixing highland culture with island wildlife. You start in the Andes, visiting indigenous communities around Otavalo before heading to the Mindo Cloud Forest, then spend a week based on land in the Galapagos, on Santa Cruz and Isabela islands.
This is a land-based approach to the islands rather than a cruise, so you get a slower, more grounded feel for Santa Cruz and Isabela while still covering a lot of wildlife territory.
Good for anyone who wants Galapagos wildlife alongside a real dose of mainland Ecuadorian culture, rather than just the islands on their own.
What you'll do
- Visit indigenous communities in the rural mountains around Otavalo
- Explore the Mindo Cloud Forest Reserve and its hummingbirds and butterflies
- Spend a week exploring the Galapagos Islands, based on land
- Stay on both Santa Cruz and Isabela islands
- Get close to the wildlife that shaped Darwin's theories
- Moderate pace, with a shift from mountain culture to island wildlife partway through
- Land-based Galapagos stay rather than a boat cruise, so days are structured around excursions from your base
- Private rooms throughout, travelling as part of a small group
Worth it if you want Ecuador's volcanic highlands and Galapagos wildlife in one trip. Think twice if you need dense activity schedules or prefer city-based exploration.
- Cotopaxi at 15,000 feet and Galapagos wildlife—tortoises, boobies, iguanas—genuinely exceptional and worth the journey.
- Tour leaders Roberto and Diageo were exceptionally knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and kept everything running on schedule daily.
- Some days feel thin on activities; cloud cover can block volcano views, and hiking guides only brief those nearest them.
- Tour starts in Tumbaco, not Quito, limiting early-arrival or late-departure flexibility for those wanting city time.
