Walking in Kyrgyzstan

Start & end in Bishkek 9 days Up to 16

About this trip

Nine days walking through Kyrgyzstan's Tien Shan mountains, covering gorges, high valleys and the shores of Lake Issyk Kul. This is a trip built around genuine hiking days rather than sightseeing with a bit of walking bolted on.

You'll spend a night in a traditional yurt and meet eagle hunters in the red rock landscape of Djety-Oguz Gorge, alongside time in Bishkek's markets and the wilder Altyn-Arashan valley.

It suits travellers who want raw mountain scenery and semi-nomadic culture over polish, and who don't mind a full walking itinerary each day.

What you'll do

  • Hike the gorges of the Tien Shan mountains around Lake Issyk Kul
  • Meet eagle hunters in the red mountains of Djety-Oguz Gorge
  • Sleep a night in a traditional yurt
  • Browse Osh Bazaar in Bishkek
  • Walk to a waterfall through Ala Archa Gorge
  • Walk beneath Palatka Peak in the Altyn-Arashan Valley
Good to know
  • Walking-focused itinerary with hiking most days
  • Mix of private and shared rooms, plus a yurt stay
  • Fully guided group trip
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you're after raw mountain scenery and genuine cultural immersion. Think twice if you need comfort, proper hiking, or minimal driving.

  • Eagle hunters, homestays, and live music nights genuinely memorable. Guides and drivers consistently excellent.
  • Far too many long travel days on rough roads with insufficient breaks; walks marketed as hikes are mostly short strolls.
  • Beds uniformly terrible (small, lumpy mattresses) except yurt camp. Bishkek guesthouse isolated, limiting city exploration on arrival.
  • Even 'rest days' involve 4 hours army vehicle driving. Kyrgyzstan's poor infrastructure means bumpy journeys are unavoidable.
