About this trip
This is Costa Rica away from the beach resorts and zip-line crowds. Over 12 days you trek into the jungle to stay with three families in a remote village, living alongside them rather than passing through.
Days are spent learning what the jungle actually offers those who live in it — medicinal plants used by locals, how sugarcane candy is made, and the rhythm of village life. It is a slower, more grounded way into the country than the usual highlight reel.
There is also room for the classic Costa Rica adventure staples, with chances to hike, surf, and take on whitewater rafting along the way.
What you'll do
- Trek into the jungle to stay with three families in a remote village
- Learn about native medicinal plants from local guides
- Try your hand at making traditional sugarcane candy
- Hike through dense jungle terrain
- Whitewater rafting and surfing opportunities
- Shared rooms throughout, including homestays with local families
- Billed as a serious trip — expect sustained trekking and physical effort, not a beach holiday
Worth it if you're genuinely prepared for jungle immersion with minimal comfort. Think twice if you need detailed pre-trip logistics or have health concerns.
- Pre-trip information is vague about jungle conditions, wet days, and lack of electricity. Pack and prepare accordingly yourself.
- If you fall ill or face emergencies mid-trek, you're on your own getting home. Group continues without pause or support.
- Guides Ingrid and Paul are genuinely exceptional; local guides patient and welcoming; homestay families generous with authentic meals.
- Hiking jungle villages, white water rafting, chocolate-making, and slow travel immersion offer rare authentic experiences most tourists miss entirely.
