About this trip

Six days built around one aim: getting you to Machu Picchu, with Lima and the Sacred Valley either side of it.

You start in Lima, based in Miraflores for a city tour and an evening to yourself, before flying to Cusco. From there you head into the Sacred Valley to see Inca stonework and terracing up close, then on to Machu Picchu itself.

It's a fast, sightseeing-focused route through Peru's Inca heartland rather than a slow explore, aimed at travellers who want the big landmarks covered in a short space of time.

What you'll do

  • Private transfer and city tour on arrival in Lima
  • Evening free in Miraflores
  • Flight from Lima to Cusco
  • Guided tour of the Sacred Valley of the Incas
  • See Inca stonework in the Sacred Valley
  • Visit Machu Picchu
Good to know
  • Partially guided — some sections are on your own rather than led throughout
  • A short trip covering a lot of ground, including a domestic flight, so days are full
  • Suits travellers who want Machu Picchu and Cusco covered efficiently rather than lingered over

  2. Meet your guide and driver at 2PM for a private Lima city tour. Visit Plaza Mayor and the San Francisco Convent, a monastery complex finished in 1674 with cloisters, churches, library and catacombs containing frescoes and sculptures. Watch your head in the low doorways.

  3. Lima – Cusco flight. Cusco City Tour — Lima

Fly east over the Andes to Cusco in one hour, then rest and acclimatise at 3,300 metres. Afternoon city tour covers Plaza de Armas, the Temple of the Sun, and the Inca sites north of the city: Sacsayhuaman's megalithic walls, Q'enqo and Pucapucara.

  4. Sacred Valley Tour. Train to Ollantaytambo-Aguas Calientes — Cusco

Full day Sacred Valley tour driving north-east from Cusco to Pisac, an eastern Inca fortress with ruins overlooking the town and an indigenous craft market. Continue west through the valley to Urubamba, then take the train from Ollantaytambo to Aguas Calientes.

  5. Machu Picchu Tour. Return to Cusco — Machu Picchu

Two hours guided exploration of Machu Picchu, the estate of Inca Pachacutec featuring the Intihuatana, Temple of the Sun, and Room of the Three Windows, built with polished dry-stone walls. Spend time hiking independently afterwards; sunrise offers the best views.

  6. Check out and transfer 15 minutes to Cusco airport for your one-hour flight back to Lima to conclude the trip.
