About this trip
This is an overland journey from Victoria Falls to Soweto, travelling by purpose-built truck through some of southern Africa's wildest landscapes. You'll cover ground through Botswana and Zimbabwe, camping out and getting close to elephants, hippos, crocodiles and more along the way.
The route takes in the Okavango Delta's waterways, the thunder of Victoria Falls, and a sunset cruise on the Chobe River as animals gather to drink. It ends with the contrast of Soweto's city energy after days in the bush.
Expect long drive days, early starts, and real camping — this is about the journey and the group as much as the wildlife itself.
What you'll do
- Explore the Okavango Delta's remote waterways by traditional mokoro or boat
- Stand before the thundering spray of Victoria Falls
- Cruise the Chobe River at sunset as wildlife comes down to drink
- Spot elephants, giraffes, hippos, crocodiles and rhinos across southern Africa's plains
- Cycle through Soweto to see the city up close
- Camp out in the bush with no facilities during the delta stretch
- This is an overland trip — you travel in a group truck without air conditioning, and drive days can be long
- Camping in the Okavango Delta means bush toilets and no showers
- Early starts are frequent, either for prime wildlife viewing or to beat traffic on long travel days
Worth it if you value exceptional staff and wildlife diversity. Think twice if you're comparing it directly to other premium African safaris.
- Staff consistently named as standout: guides, cooks, drivers all praised for knowledge, friendliness and professionalism.
- Bush camp in Okavango Delta with close animal encounters was the genuine highlight for multiple travellers.
- Trip frustrating in execution despite good locations and experiences; doesn't match Serengeti-level safaris despite similar cost.
- Small group dynamics worked well; Intrepid's sustainability values and high-quality kit met travellers' expectations consistently.
