About this trip
Seventeen days across Vietnam and Cambodia, tracing a route through imperial cities, war history, river deltas and ancient temples. It's a broad sweep rather than a slow linger — the kind of trip for someone who wants the headline sights of both countries covered properly rather than picking just one region.
You move from the limestone karsts of Halong Bay down through Hue's old imperial capital, the tailor shops and river lanes of Hoi An, and on into Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta, before crossing into Cambodia for Phnom Penh and the temples of Angkor.
Guides lead you through the history at each stop, so it's as much about understanding what you're looking at — the citadels, tunnels, and temple carvings — as seeing it.
What you'll do
- Overnight cruise through Halong Bay's limestone cliffs
- Wander Hoi An's ancient town and take a boat trip on the Thu Bon River
- Descend into the Cu Chi Tunnels used during the Vietnam War
- Visit Hue's Citadel, Royal Tombs and Thien Mu Pagoda
- Boat trip through the Mekong Delta
- Explore Angkor's temple complex, including the carved faces of Bayon
- Covers two countries and a lot of ground in 17 days, so expect frequent moves between cities
- Mix of overnight cruise and hotel stays throughout
- Suits travellers more interested in history and heritage sites than beach time or downtime
Worth it if you want smooth logistics and decent hotels across two countries. Think twice if you need equal time split, consistent guide quality, or five-star dining.
- Organisation and logistics consistently praised; guides, drivers, and transport bookings handled reliably throughout.
- Cambodia itinerary crammed and rushed; Vietnam could be condensed to balance time between the two countries better.
- Guide quality inconsistent, especially in Vietnam; some had poor English. Food standards wavered: La Vella breakfast terrible, some lunch spots basic with poor facilities.
- Hotel locations sometimes remote from main attractions; Koi Resort and La Vella not ideally placed despite decent rooms.
