About this trip
The Marangu route is Kilimanjaro's oldest and most established path, nicknamed the Coca-Cola route. Its gradual slope makes it the mountain's easiest ascent, and it is the only route with dormitory-style sleeping huts rather than tents.
This 6-day itinerary builds in an extra acclimatization day beyond the bare minimum, which meaningfully improves your odds of reaching the summit. The trade-off is that you ascend and descend the same path, so there is less scenery variety and more traffic from other climbers than on alternative routes.
It suits climbers who want a straightforward, hut-based approach to Kilimanjaro, particularly in the rainy season when solid shelter is a real advantage.
What you'll do
- Trek the historic Marangu route to Kilimanjaro's summit
- Sleep in dormitory-style mountain huts rather than tents
- Take a built-in acclimatization day to improve summit chances
- Follow the mountain's most gradual, gentlest ascent path
- The same path is used for both ascent and descent, so scenery repeats and it's the most crowded of the routes
- Considered the easiest route due to its gradual slope, but a five-day version (without the extra acclimatization day) has a low summit success rate
- Better suited to the rainy season, when hut accommodation is a real benefit
Worth it if you're reasonably fit, want attentive guides and solid logistics. Think twice if you expect to offload all your gear to porters.
- Guides consistently named (Emmanuel, Jackson, Siza, Zakaria) go genuinely above and beyond with encouragement and mountain knowledge.
- Food quality repeatedly praised as surprisingly good for high altitude, alongside organised camp setup before arrival.
- One reviewer notes porters already carry food, water and equipment; packing sensibly yourself isn't optional, it's expected.
- Marangu route quieter than alternatives, follows ridge lines through forests before clearing tree line.
