About this trip
The Machame Route is Kilimanjaro's most popular trail for good reason. It's longer and tougher than the Marangu Route, but that extra day buys you more time to acclimatize, which is likely why more people actually reach the summit on this route.
You camp the whole way, moving through changing landscapes from rainforest up to alpine desert and finally the summit push. Guides rate it as one of the more rewarding routes on the mountain, even if your legs will disagree by day three.
This version runs six days and five nights, taking the Barafu route to the top, with the option of an extra acclimatization day in the Karanga Valley.
What you'll do
- Trek through rainforest from Machame Gate
- Cross the Shira Plateau
- Climb the Barranco Wall
- Acclimatize in the Karanga Valley
- Summit via the Barafu Route to reach Uhuru Peak
- A demanding trek — expect long, tough days and camping throughout
- Longer than the Marangu Route, but this generally means better acclimatization and a higher chance of summiting
- An extra acclimatization day in Karanga Valley is usually built in
Worth it if you want a well-organised climb with strong guides and proper acclimatisation. Think twice if you dislike early starts, thin air, or group dynamics on a physically brutal six-day push.
- Guide Epa and the crew earned consistent praise for professionalism, health monitoring, and keeping all climbers safe at altitude.
- Meals were generous and well-executed; tents were waterproof and sturdy; sleeping kit was comfortable—logistics rarely slip.
- The route is genuinely tough; altitude sickness risk is real, though slow acclimatisation over four days helps mitigate it.
- Six-day summit push is physically demanding and mentally taxing; success depends heavily on fitness and individual acclimatisation.
