About this trip
This is the Machame Route up Kilimanjaro, known to some as the Whisky Route. You climb steep paths through forest, then follow a ridge across the moorland to the Shira Plateau, before traversing beneath the glaciated cliffs of the Southern Icefields to join the Barafu Route for the summit push.
Nights on the mountain are spent camping, with porters pitching your tent at each stop. The descent comes down via the Mweka Route.
This is a steep, physically demanding trek, suited to fit individuals with some experience walking in mountain terrain rather than complete beginners.
What you'll do
- Climb through forest and up onto the moorland ridge
- Reach the Shira Plateau, with the option of an extra day to walk to the Shira Needles
- Traverse beneath the Southern Icefields' glaciated precipices
- Join the Barafu Route for the summit push
- Descend via the Mweka Route
- Camp each night, with porters pitching your tent
- Steep, tough trekking suited to fit individuals used to mountain walking, not a beginner's route
- You will need your own sleeping bag, warm clothing and walking poles
- Strong groups have the option to skip the Karanga River camp; an extra acclimatisation day on the Shira Plateau can also be added
Worth it if you're fit enough for a serious physical challenge and want proper acclimatization. Think twice if you dislike early starts, cold nights, or steep terrain.
- Seven days allows genuine acclimatization; reviewers credit this with summit success and managing altitude sickness.
- Guide quality is exceptional and consistent: Clinton, Musa, Lema, and Yesse Lema named repeatedly for expertise, safety focus, and morale.
- Food quality and variety stand out—fresh fruit, hearty stews, vegan options, hot drinks kept energy high throughout.
- Summit night is brutally cold and long; steep rainforest sections and rocky alpine terrain demand real fitness beforehand.
