About this trip
This is a Kilimanjaro climb via the Lemosho Route, approaching the mountain from the west and crossing the Shira Plateau before joining the southern circuit for the summit attempt. Lemosho is one of the quieter, more scenic ways up the mountain, and its longer duration is built in specifically to help your body acclimatise.
You'll trek with professional mountain guides through changing terrain, starting in lower forest zones where wildlife such as elephants, buffalo and antelope can sometimes be spotted — occasionally with an armed ranger accompanying the group because of this.
It's a camping-based expedition, with the route eventually meeting the Barafu Route (or, in some cases, the Western Breach) for the final push to the summit.
What you'll do
- Trek the less-crowded Lemosho Route up Kilimanjaro
- Cross the Shira Plateau
- Watch for elephants, buffalo and antelope in the lower forest zones
- Camp your way up the mountain with professional mountain guides
- Join the Barafu Route (or Western Breach) for the summit attempt
- Lemosho's longer route is designed to aid acclimatisation and reduce the risk of altitude sickness
- An armed ranger may join the trek at times due to wildlife in the lower forest sections
- This is a genuine high-altitude expedition — expect camping and multiple days at altitude rather than a gentle walk
Worth it if you're reasonably fit and accept altitude sickness is a real risk. Think twice if you need guaranteed summit success or prefer independent trekking.
- Guides Issa, John, William genuinely supportive; porters cheerful and hardworking throughout the entire trek.
- Chef produces consistently delicious, nutritious meals with minimal equipment; keeps energy up on hard days.
- Altitude sickness happens to fit people too; summit success depends partly on individual acclimatisation, not just guides.
- Lemosho route genuinely beautiful with forest, wildlife, flowers; September weather described as perfect.
