Climb Kilimanjaro – Machame 6 Days | Scenic & Challenging Trek with Expert Guides

Start & end in Kilimanjaro 8 days Up to 12

About this trip

This is a six-day climb of Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route, known as the Whisky Route for its steady, scenic climb through changing landscapes. You start in dense rainforest, cross a ridge into moorland, and reach the Shira Plateau before pushing on toward the summit.

The terrain shifts constantly — steep paths, rocky sections, forest trails — which keeps the days varied even as the altitude and effort build. Machame is one of the more physically demanding routes up the mountain, so you'll want a solid base of fitness and the mental grit to keep going when it gets tough.

Guides are professionally trained mountain crew, and the operator holds Travelife Partner certification for its sustainability practices.

What you'll do

  • Trek through rainforest on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro
  • Cross the ridge onto the Shira Plateau
  • Pass through moorland zones with views over the African savannah
  • Take in glacier views as you climb higher
  • Camp each night as you ascend the mountain
Good to know
  • A demanding route — good physical fitness and mental resilience are genuinely needed
  • This is a camping trek, not lodge-based, throughout the climb
What travellers actually say

Worth it if you want attentive guides, solid logistics, and stunning scenery. Think twice if you're not acclimatized or fit—the Machame route is genuinely tough.

  • Guides like Living and TomTom are genuinely engaging, well-respected on the mountain, and create real camaraderie with climbers.
  • Pre- and post-trek logistics are thoughtful: Springlands hotel staff, transfers, clear communication from contact Joyce throughout.
  • Machame route is legitimately demanding; at least one climber turned back on day four despite good support and organization.
  • Food is plentiful and varied, porter teams work hard and keep morale up even when things get tough.
