About this trip
This is a 10-day climb of Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho route, one of the quieter ways up the mountain. You start on paths that see far fewer hikers than the busier routes, camping throughout as you make your way up.
The route takes you across the Shira Plateau before joining the Machame path higher up, with the summit often appearing snow-capped against the sky as you climb. It's a longer, more gradual approach than some routes, which helps with acclimatisation, but reaching the top is still a serious physical challenge.
There are optional variations along the way, including a night in Karanga Valley, the chance to camp near Arrow Glacier if you take the Western Breach, or an overnight at the crater near the summit.
What you'll do
- Trek across the Shira Plateau on the quieter Lemosho route
- Join the Machame route path higher up the mountain
- Optional overnight in Karanga Valley
- Optional Western Breach ascent with camping near Arrow Glacier
- Optional overnight at the summit crater
- Reach the summit of Kilimanjaro
- A longer, more gradual route than some alternatives, but summiting is still physically demanding
- Camping throughout, so expect a basic, outdoor pace
- The Western Breach option is more hazardous and better suited to those wanting a tougher challenge
Worth it if you're fit enough for altitude and want genuinely attentive guides. Think twice if you need creature comforts or dislike early starts and basic camping.
- Guides Brayan, Emanuel, Daniel consistently praised for pacing, altitude management, and staying with climbers through hard moments.
- Food quality remarkable for camping: fresh veg, generous portions, hot tea daily. Cook delivers despite primitive kitchen conditions.
- Altitude sickness real risk. Some climbers didn't summit despite medicine; basic fitness and training genuinely required beforehand.
- Pre-climb hotel in Moshi decent but basic; nearby restaurants (Dawn cafe) offer better food if you're picky.
