About this trip
This is a 7-day climb of Kilimanjaro via the Machame Route, known locally as the Whisky Route, one of the more scenic ways up Africa's highest mountain. You start through dense forest, climb a ridge into moorland, and cross the Shira Plateau before the long push to the summit.
The route is steeper and more physically demanding than some alternatives, but the extra days built into the itinerary give your body more time to adjust to altitude, which helps with acclimatization and improves your chances of reaching the top.
You'll be camping throughout, guided by a professionally trained mountain crew, with the trip run by a Travelife-certified operator.
What you'll do
- Trek through montane forest on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro
- Cross the ridge into the moorland zone
- Traverse the Shira Plateau
- Camp at successive altitude camps as you ascend
- Push for the summit on the final climb
- A physically demanding route with steep paths — decent fitness helps
- Longer itinerary than some Kilimanjaro routes, giving better acclimatization time
- Camping throughout, so expect a no-frills, outdoors pace
Worth it if you want a well-organised climb with genuinely competent guides and porters who'll get you to the summit. Think twice if you need more detail on logistics, costs, or altitude challenges.
- Guides Dastan, Faustin, Kidoti and Makoni consistently praised for professionalism, preparation help, and summit success.
- Food and camp quality stand out; chef described as making some of the best meals eaten in Tanzania.
- Patrick's pre-trip communication straightforward and budget-conscious; no booking hitches reported across reviews.
- Reviews don't mention specific costs, daily itinerary details, or altitude sickness experiences to plan properly.
